Darrell became First Baptist's seventh Senior Pastor in July 2013.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mississippi College and a Master's of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.  He has also completed his Doctoral Residency in Education and Leadership from SBTS.  After serving as the Associate Pastor of Second Baptist Church, he was the founding pastor of both Gayton Baptist and New Journey churches, all in Richmond.  He has worked with the Crater Agency on Aging and served on the Board of Directors of the following agencies:  Richmond Metro Habitat for Humanity, New Look Youth Ministries, and the Virginia Emergency Foster Care Program.

Rev. April Sledge, Pastor of Students & Families 

April became our Pastor to Students & Families in May after serving in a similar position at Skipwith Baptist Church for the past five years.  She is a native of Varina and holds a Master of Divinity degree from the Baptist Theological Seminary of Richmond and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University.


Grace Chase, Minister of Music

GraceGrace has led the music ministry of this church for over 30 years.  She has a passion and enthusiasm for sharing the Gospel through worship and song, and her energetic hands-on approach finds her encouraging the musical gifts of all age groups be they vocal or instrumental.  A native of Gretna, Virginia, Grace earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey.

Along with leading our music ministry, she has taught piano in the tri-city area for many years.  A resident of Hopewell, Grace was married to the late Paran Chase for fifty years and has three grown daughters.

Brenda Story, Administrative Assistant

Brenda recently joined our staff and brings many years of professional office administration experience with her to FBC.  She came to us directly from Heart Havens in Richmond where she worked as Human Resources Assistant.  Prior to that position, she completed 15 years of service with BI Chemicals, Inc. in Petersburg, where she served in several administrative capacities.

Brenda lives in Colonial Heights with her husband of 17 years, Larry.  They share a family of one daughter and two sons and a total of 7 grandchildren.


Gloria Andrs, Pianist

Gloria joined the staff in September 1975. She is well known in the area for her musical abilities. Gloria is a graduate of Hopewell High School and has a Bachelor of Music Degree from Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University). While in college she accompanied the college chorus, many of the theatrical productions at R.P.I., and later shows in Hopewell and at Fort Lee. She has taught piano lessons to many youth and adults. A member of FBC all of her life, she accompanies both the Sanctuary Choir and the Singing Saints. She and her husband, Jerry, live in Chester and have four grown children and three grandchildren.

Karen Sheppard, Organist

Karen joined the FBC staff in October 2006. She accompanies the Sanctuary Choir and leads the Praise Team. A native of Prince George County, Karen graduated with honors from Campbell University with a degree in vocal performance and minors in church music and piano. Before moving back to Virginia, she served as minister of music at several North Carolina churches. Karen was a student for eleven years of Grace Chase, our minister of music. She and her husband Andy now live in Hopewell with their son Coulter and daughter Rorie.

Dorothy West, Sexton

Dorothy has been maintaining the interior of the church buildings since she joined the staff in December 1985. She moved to Hopewell from Salisbury, Maryland, in 1974, and has been a member of Enon Church of God for thirty years. Dorothy has one son and five grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys working with many types of crafts.
